NIAMS – The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the institute within the National Institutes of Health whose mission is to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases, the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research, and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases. NIAMS is the nation’s foremost funding source for arthritis research.

 

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – A class of medications that work to reduce pain, fever and inflammation by blocking substances called prostaglandins. Some NSAIDs are available over the counter. About a dozen more are available with a doctor’s prescription.
