Volunteer Spotlight

Q&A with Volunteer Brad Pittenger

How long have you volunteered with the Arthritis Foundation?
4 years

Why the Arthritis Foundation?
We became exposed to the AF through Cabin Fever.  We have a daughter who was diagnosed 4 years ago, at the age of 2, with JRA.  Cabin Fever was an awesome experience where we could network and talk with other parents of kids with JRA.  We were also exposed to education regarding JRA.  We had no idea prior to Kate’s diagnosis that kids can get arthritis.

What makes you passionate about the Foundation?
They provide resources and programs for people and families with arthritis.

Why continue to volunteer?
We are able to help raise money to fight arthritis, increase awareness of JRA and help other parents going through those first scary months after diagnosis.  Most of the money we raise, stays right here in St. Louis impacting our community.

Why should other people volunteer with the Foundation?
Arthritis is the number one cause of disability.  There are more kids affected and those with Juvenile Diabetes and Cerebral Palsy combined!  Arthritis isn’t an old persons disease causing discomfort – for some, it is a debilitating, life changing disease that can sometimes be fatal!

Most memorable experience while working with the Foundation?
Our first Cabin Fever – seeing the kids – all kids including the ones affected directly and the ones affected indirectly (siblings) treated the same while having a great time.  At the same time, parents learn about real world treatments and methods to deal with the disease.  We learn from other parents what has worked for their children.  Things such as how to give injections w/ less stress, how to get off steroids w/o relapse, etc.  Sometimes traditional methods don’t work with these kids and learning from other parents what has worked with their kids is invaluable.
