The Joy of Movement

Motion is more than just exercise: It’s good for your soul, as well as your body.

 By Kenna Simmons

Yes, exercise is beneficial for your joints, your muscles, your heart and your health. But, all too often, it can seem like a chore – maybe because the very word “exercise” conjures up images of a rote routine that’s more dutiful than inspired.

But think of exercise as movement, for the sheer joy of motion, and you sweep aside the idea of duty. In its place, a world of choices opens up. Do what you truly love to do – hike a trail, swing a bat or dance the night away.

Still looking for inspiration? We asked three people with arthritis to tell us how they get a move on. For each of them, the dead of winter brings to life their love of cold-weather sports.

Dorothy Hamill – Olympic figure skating champion

Erik Lindbergh – Skier, mountaineer and pilot

Nancy Little – Ice hockey player
